New Study: Glucosamine, Chondroitin Offer No Aid for Joint Pain
Glucosamine Under Fire After Proven Ineffective
If you're one of the millions of Americans who buys glucosamine or chondroitin
supplements to ease joint pain, you may want to think twice. [View Source] The American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons said this week that there's no reason for people to take the
supplements, citing a number of recent studies that failed to show any benefit from them.

The group included the joint supplements in a list of treatments that patients often turn to
but that aren't supported by evidence. The list is part of a campaign called Choosing
Wisely, a program that aims to reduce waste and harm in medical care. It is led by
Consumer Reports and the ABIM Foundation, a group formed by the American Board of
Internal Medicine.
The popular supplements glucosamine and chondroitin don't do much to relieve the pain
associated with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), according to a new analysis of 10 studies. [View Source]

This is not the first time that research has cast doubt on the effectiveness of these two
supplements. The heavily anticipated, government-funded Glucosamine/chondroitin
Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) also showed that overall they did not improve knee OA
pain. A follow-up arm of this study showed that they did not do any better than placebo in
slowing loss of cartilage that occurs in osteoarthritis of the knee. OA is the wear-and-tear
form of arthritis, and affects more than 20 million people.

The new analysis of 10 studies, comprising 3,803 people, reinforces the negative findings
of the GAIT trial. Glucosamine, chondroitin, or their combination are no better than placebo
(dummy pill) when it comes to joint pain and joint space narrowing, the new study shows.
Glucosamine Shows No Improvement In Joint Pain
A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2010 concluded that, "glucosamine and
chondroitin, either taken together or separately, have not shown a clinically significant
improvement in joint pain relief for patients troubled with knee or hip osteoarthritis. The
author of the study stated that, "Our findings indicate that glucosamine, chondroitin, and
their combination do not result in a relevant improvement in joint pain relief nor affect
joint space narrowing compared with placebo." [BMJ 2010; 341:c4675]

More recently in 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) denounced joint support
claims for glucosamine. The EFSA panel concluded that, "a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of glucosamine and maintenance of
normal joint cartilage in individuals with osteoarthritis" [EFSA Journal 2012;10(5):2691].

Despite its dominance in the industry, glucosamine & chondroitin has recently come under
fire from the scientific and medical community with serious questions about the efficacy of
this combination as a remedy for joint pain relief.
U.S. Consumers Spent $753 Million In 2012
U.S. consumers spent $753 million in 2012 on glucosamine and chondroitin supplements
in an attempt to relieve pain and stiffness from arthritis, [View Source] according to the Nutrition Business Journal. But the scientific jury is still out as to whether those products work. And on top of that, our new tests of 16 widely sold joint supplements found that some
contained less chondroitin than they said they did, and two didn't dissolve sufficiently.

All of the tested products contain a combination of glucosamine salt (either hydrochloride
or sulfate) and chondroitin sulfate, ingredients that occur naturally in and around the
cartilage that cushions the joints. Some research has suggested that the combination
might reduce pain in certain people with osteoarthritis, the degenerative joint disease
that affects 27 million Americans. But the evidence is far from conclusive.

In a large, multicenter trial published in 2006, researchers found some evidence that
glucosamine and chondroitin alleviated pain in patients with moderate to severe knee
osteoarthritis, the most common type. But subsequent studies have not confirmed that
finding. And treatment guidelines issued in May 2013 by the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons don't recommend glucosamine and chondroitin supplements,
citing lack of efficacy.

Compared with placebo, glucosamine, chondroitin, and their combination do not reduce
joint pain or have an impact on narrowing of joint space. Health authorities and health
insurers should not cover the costs of these preparations, and new prescriptions to
patients who have not received treatment should be discouraged.

The usual daily pain in my joints is much
less with this product. I noticed a difference

GNC Releases TFX Flex™ (with UC-II®), #1 Selling Triple Threat
TFX Flex™ In High Demand At GNC Retail & Online Stores
TFX Health, LLC and General Nutrition Company (GNC) have teamed up to introduce the
popular joint health supplement TFX Flex™ which is now available in GNC stores
nationwide as well as GNC.com, the online portal for the nation's leading specialty
supplement and vitamin reseller. TFX Flex™ contains a breakthrough new dietary
ingredient known as UC-II® that has been proven in human clinical studies to be 2X more
effective than Glucosamine & Chondroitin for joint pain relief and improved joint health
comfort and flexibility.

According to a TFX Health company spokesman, "GNC is the most important retail
distribution channel for health and wellness products in general, and cutting edge new
science in particular. The cooperation between the two companies was essential to make
TFX Flex™ readily available for those seeking new and improved solutions to joint health
problems."

Both companies also share the view that joints can only be as healthy as the bones and
muscles to which they are attached. With the introduction of TFX Flex™ there is finally a
product on the market that combines clinically proven ingredients for muscle, bone, and
joint support providing a safe and effective solution for the entire musculoskeletal
system. Since its launch earlier this year, TFX Flex™ has quickly become GNC's best selling
triple threat product for bone, joint, and muscle health.

Most joint products on the market ignore the fact that joints are only as healthy as the
bones and muscles to which they are attached. Proper care and nutrition for all the
moving parts of the musculoskeletal system is essential for optimal health. With over 12
different vitamins and nutrients (including MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, White Willow Bark,
Boswellia, Turmeric, Ipriflavone, Vitamin D3, and A-AKG), TFX Flex™ is the only joint
supplement on the market that contains all active ingredients to support healthy bones,
joints and muscles.

The new research recently published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary
Medicine is yet another independent source supporting claims related to the safety and
effectiveness of TFX Flex™ as a one of the best new joint health supplements available on
the market.

The best Joint Product I have ever used.
I really think this is a great product. Now that I am in my 50's ... my joints are limiting my recreational
activities. I have tried other joint products .. they help but not as much as TFX Flex. I have read the
clinical studies on the UCII ... Impressive studies.. I will recommend this to my friends..

Love This Stuff!!!!!
After two knee surgeries, I was skeptical after trying just about everything out there for my knee aches,
but when you're in pain, you'll try just about anything. I'm glad that I gave this a shot, as it worked great,
and I was seeing/feeling results in less than a week! Obviously I can't speak for all, but it worked great for
me, and I'm just getting ready to order more!

I metal detect as a hobby, and with all the bending/kneeling/squatting, it was really taking its toll on my
knee, but when I started talking TFXFlex, I hardly noticed it anymore!!! At age 50, I'm too young for knee
replacement (ugh), but now I don't have to worry about it any longer.

Hopefully you'll get the same relief that I got by using this, I really do stand by this stuff. It worked great!!!

Awesome Product!!
This is my first review ever, as I never feel truly compelled to write about products that work as they are
supposed to. After all, you buy something to perform and hopefully that is what you get. But I must say,
I'm blown away how well TFX Flex has worked for me in less than one month! I am a distance runner (half
and full marathons) and training for my first Half Ironman Triathlon. I also have some chronic knee pain
(arthritis), but nothing so severe as to stop me from doing what I love. I have been taking liquid
chondroitin/glucosamine on a regular basis for quite some time which has kept my knee pain
tolerable/minimal. Recently, I got an opportunity to buy a trial bottle of TFX Flex, paying just for shipping,
so I jumped on it. Here I am 3 weeks into the trial and I am THRILLED at how good my knee feels,
particularly after very long bike rides (50+ miles) and long runs (10+ miles). I have NO swelling, and NO
creakiness in the mornings after such workouts. I'm ecstatic! And as a side benefit I'm also finding my wrist
which was badly shattered 3 years ago and has lots of hardware in it, feels better than it ever has since
the accident. I couldn't be happier! I'd give TFX Flex 10 STARS if I could!
